Common questions

The things people ask before they get in touch, answered plainly.

What does It's In The Details do?

It's In The Details is a small tax and business support practice in Napier, run by Heidi Dunlop. It covers tax compliance, business setup support, ongoing guidance and accountability, and education-focused support for small business owners. The difference from a standard accounting service is that Heidi explains what is happening and why, so you understand your own numbers rather than simply handing them over.

Do you work with businesses outside Napier?

Yes, all over New Zealand. Heidi is based in Napier, but where you are is not what matters. She works with clients by video call, and she loves to travel around the country too. What matters is working with people who want to learn, understand and improve.

How is this different from a normal accountant?

Most accountants focus on getting the work done behind the scenes. Heidi focuses on making sure you understand what is happening and why it matters, so you walk away from a conversation with clarity rather than more confusion. The goal is not to create dependency. As she puts it, if she teaches you enough that you do not need her any more, that is a win.

Do you take on every business that asks?

No, and she is upfront about that. An education-first approach suits owners who want to learn their numbers, ask questions and take responsibility for their decisions. It does not suit someone who wants a set-and-forget service with no involvement, or who is looking for the cheapest option rather than the right fit. The 'are we right for each other' page sets out both sides honestly so you can decide before you get in touch.

What happens after I send an enquiry?

Your message goes straight to Heidi. She reads it herself and typically replies within one to two business days. If it is urgent, say so in the message. There is no call centre and no account manager in between.

I am just starting out. Is it too early to talk to you?

No. Business setup support is one of the four things Heidi does, and the structure you choose at the start affects your tax and compliance for years afterwards. Getting that decision right early is usually cheaper and simpler than unpicking it later.

When do I have to register for GST in New Zealand?

You must register for GST if your taxable turnover reaches $60,000 in any twelve month period, or if you expect it to. The test looks both backwards over the last twelve months and forwards over the next twelve, and either one triggers the obligation. Below $60,000 registering is voluntary, and there are situations where it still makes sense. This is general information rather than advice about your business: check your own position with Inland Revenue at ird.govt.nz, or ask Heidi to look at it with you.

Should I be a sole trader or set up a company?

It depends on what you are doing, what you expect to earn, what risk you are carrying and what you want the business to become. There is no answer that is right for everybody, which is exactly why it is worth talking through rather than copying what someone else did. Heidi walks you through the decisions and what each one means for your tax and compliance, so you choose with your eyes open.

Still not sure?

If your question is not here, ask it. Heidi reads every message herself and usually replies within one to two business days.
